Quick answer

The Big Green Egg XL delivers for the committed EGGhead who needs more capacity without switching brands. It brings a 61 cm grate, the same dense refractory ceramic across the range and access to the vast EGGcessory ecosystem that built BGE's community. With a 9.1 score, it's the natural next step when the Large runs short. It's for owners who already have BGE gear and want to size up without relearning; if you're new and want multi-level out of the box, the Big Joe III ships with it.

When the Large stops being enough, this is the natural next rung. 61 cm grate, the same NASA-patented ceramic and the same EGGcessory ecosystem that made BGE the kamado world's most loyal following.

Verdict

For the committed EGGhead who needs more chamber without leaving the ecosystem.

9.1/10

Pros

  • 61 cm — same cooking size as the Big Joe III, in BGE ceramic
  • Biggest accessory market in the kamado world: nests, tables, plate setters
  • Dense refractory ceramic — benchmark heat retention
  • Transferable lifetime warranty, very strong resale value
  • Massive EGGhead community: forums, fests, peer support

Cons

  • No multi-tier grate or SlōRoller-equivalent: anything you add, you buy separately
  • Nest, table and plate setter usually go separately — the final bill scales quickly
  • Analog stock thermometer, no digital readout or app
  • 102 kg unframed — the install needs two people and a serious cart

For you if…

If you already know BGE, own accessories, and want to scale up without learning a new brand.

Not for you if…

If you're new to kamados and want multi-tier out of the box — the Big Joe III ships with it.

FAQ

  • Should I buy the BGE XL or the Big Joe III?

Same usable area (61 cm) and similarly dense ceramic. The difference: the Big Joe ships with Divide & Conquer multi-tier and SlōRoller from the factory; BGE sells them as accessories (multilevel rack, ConvEGGtor). If you already own BGE gear from a Large, the XL reuses everything that fits the Large. Starting fresh, the Big Joe is more complete out of the box.

  • Why does BGE not ship with a cart?

Because BGE sells two install philosophies: the nest (metal frame with wheels) for patios and the table (wooden cabinet) for outdoor-kitchen integration. The buyer picks based on the garden. Historic brand logic, but it means the "real" XL price is sticker + 350-500 € for the frame. Factor that in before comparing to a Big Joe III, which already includes a reinforced cart.

  • Is the Big Green Egg's 'NASA' ceramic real?

It is brand lore more than a technical fact. There is no evidence of a NASA patent licensed to Big Green Egg: the Egg's ceramic is inspired by refractory materials of the kind used in the space programme, but today it is a dense refractory ceramic — made by its ceramics partner in Mexico — equivalent to that of any premium kamado (Kamado Joe, Monolith). What is real and measurable is the performance: it holds a steady 110 °C for hours on a single load. The "NASA ceramic" is not an exclusive advantage; it is brand folklore.

  • How often do I replace the lid gasket?

Every 2-3 years with heavy use (2-3 cooks a week), every 4-5 years with occasional use. The stock BGE gasket is high-temp fibre — it slowly carbonises until the seal fails. Tell-tale sign: temperature gets harder to stabilise because air leaks through the gasket. Genuine replacement runs about 25 € and swaps in 20 minutes — the lifetime warranty does not cover it.

  • Does it hold strong resale if I lose interest?

BGE has the strongest resale in the kamado market, tied with Kamado Joe. A 5-year-old XL in good shape sells on Wallapop for 60-70% of new, thanks to the transferable lifetime warranty and the EGGcessory ecosystem. Compare with a budget kamado like Kamado Bono: loses 50% of value in year one. Dense ceramic simply does not age like painted steel.
