LeChef is Monolith's flagship: 56 cm grate, 175 kg of dense ceramic, and a module designed to drop into a masonry outdoor kitchen. If you're planning a garden cookhouse, this is the heart you place first.

Verdict

The pick if you're building a real outdoor kitchen and want a European-made kamado at the centre.

9.1/10

Pros

  • 56 cm grate — between the Classic III and the Big Joe III in usable area
  • Designed to drop into masonry: modules and drawings published by Monolith
  • Front ash drawer and factory BBQ Guru adapter as standard
  • European service, official spares stocked on the continent
  • Massive build (175 kg): dense ceramic holds heat for hours

Cons

  • 175 kg with the frame: install needs a courier and three people
  • Not portable: once in the garden, it stays there
  • If you usually cook for 4, this is too much grill — wasted charcoal
  • Amazon ES stock can be intermittent — verify availability before ordering

For you if…

If you build modular outdoor kitchens, cook for 12+, or want a European alternative to the Big Joe III with EU service.

Not for you if…

If you won't use the 56 cm — a Classic Pro 2.0 gives you the same experience with half the charcoal.

Essentials to get started

FAQ

  • Can it be built into a masonry kitchen?

It is designed for exactly that. Monolith publishes official LeChef module drawings with dimensions to build the void in masonry — mandatory bottom and rear ventilation, minimum 80×80 cm base footprint. The only kamado in the catalog with factory built-in documentation. The headline reason to pick it for a permanent modular outdoor kitchen.

  • Is it too much kamado for a normal family?

Yes, if your average is 4 diners. The LeChef's 56 cm sits between the Classic III (46 cm) and the Big Joe III (61 cm) in usable area — a sweet spot for 8-12 people. For a regular 4-top you carry too much chamber, burn 2-3 kg more charcoal per cook and add 15 minutes to stabilise. A magnificent grill, but oversized for a 4-person table.

  • Do they deliver to my garden or only kerbside?

Amazon delivers on a pallet to the front door. From pallet to garden is your problem: 175 kg with the frame needs three people, a serious sack truck, and a flat step-free path. If you live in a flat with a lift, rethink the purchase — no domestic lift takes that load. In a house with an accessible garden, two hours and three pairs of hands.

  • How much charcoal lasts a full session?

A full LeChef XL firebox holds 7-8 kg of lump — enough for a 14-hour brisket at 110 °C with no reload. A 3-hour pizza session at 350 °C for 12 people burns 5-6 kg. The thermal mass of 175 kg of ceramic is brutal: once stabilised, the LeChef "forgets" about the fire for hours.

  • Is it worth it vs the Big Joe III?

Different markets. The Big Joe III is 5 cm bigger (61 vs 56 cm), wins on three-tier Divide & Conquer and SlōRoller — but its service depends on KJ's European distributor. The LeChef wins on the ash drawer, factory BBQ Guru, T-Fitting and direct EU service from Germany. For built-in outdoor kitchens, LeChef no contest. For freestanding garden use with high cooking ceilings, Big Joe.
