How many hours does a 9.1kg bag of Big Block XL last?
A full 3kg basket runs 16-18 hours of indirect cooking at 110°C — a full brisket with no refill. A whole bag covers three long smokes or six or seven high-heat grilling sessions. If you do weekly 250°C burgers, the bag goes quicker (3-4 sessions per bag).
What smoke flavour does the Argentinian blend add?
Sweet undertone, no aggression. The four Argentinian woods (guayacán, guayaibí, mistol, white quebracho) build a mild aromatic profile that lifts the meat without masking. Do not expect the slap of mesquite or the deep sweetness of cherry — Big Block is the "wardrobe staple" coal for any protein, on top of which you add specific chunks.
Does it suit all kamados or only Kamado Joe?
Universal — coal does not know brands. Works equally in BGE, Pit Boss, Louisiana, Char-Griller, Weber Kettle or any smoker. The "Kamado Joe" label is because they commission it to spec from Argentina, but the contents work in any firebox.
How do I reuse a half-burnt batch of charcoal?
When the cook is done, fully shut both vents (top and bottom). The kamado chokes, the coals snuff in 30-40 minutes and the charcoal stays partially carbonised but usable. Next time, top with fresh charcoal, light a single zone, and the reused coals ignite like new. Big Block XL handles two or three cycles like this.
How does it differ from Jealous Devil 100% quebracho?
Three things: Big Block is a blend (not pure quebracho), gives a more complex smoke flavour, costs less per kilo. Jealous Devil pure quebracho has longer burn (20+ hours vs 18), less ash and a more neutral profile. Big Block is the sensible default; Jealous Devil is the long-smoke purist upgrade.
