Origins and philosophy
Some kamado brands are born from marketing; others from an obsession. Monolith belongs to the second group. The company was founded in Osnabrück, Germany, in 2008 by Matthias Otto, a textile engineer who, frustrated at never finding the grill he had in mind, sold his business to build it himself. That reinvention says a lot about the house style: no grand promises, just a fixed idea of control, repeatability and serious construction. It is still a family business of human scale, and you can feel it in how carefully the details are resolved.
In the European premium segment, Monolith plays in the same league as Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg, but with an accent of its own: German engineering applied to ceramic. Where other brands lean on lifestyle imagery, the tone here is more sober and more technical, and that suits us.
What sets Monolith apart
The brand's headline feature is its Smart Grid System, which lets you cook on several levels at once using half-moon grates, divisible charcoal baskets and deflectors that create distinct temperature zones inside the same kamado. In practice you can run a cut low and slow up top while you sear vegetables or fish over direct heat below.
Airflow control deserves its own line. The lower and upper vents dial in temperature with unusual precision, and the larger models also accept electronic BBQ Guru-style control for long, unattended cooks. With thick ceramic that holds heat gracefully, you get a grill that is stable, predictable and built to last. The catch: the modular accessory ecosystem is excellent, but it invites spending.
Our assessment
We analysed the Monolith range with its natural setting in mind: the Costa Blanca, with its long evenings and its Mediterranean live-fire cooking. Drawing on the specs, on the user community and on our experience cooking on our Big Green Egg Large, the Classic Pro 2.0 strikes us as the most sensible balance for a household: a manageable footprint, ample grate for a gathering, and the range to go from Neapolitan pizza to octopus or a slow rack of ribs. When the table grows, the LeChef Pro 2.0 XL stretches the possibilities, while the Junior Pro 2.0 and the portable Icon 13 take care of balconies, second homes and weekend trips.
Who is it not for? If your goal is to light up, grill four sausages and clear away in ten minutes, a kamado at this level is more machine than you need. Monolith rewards the cook who enjoys the process and wants to nail the same result twice.
