Monolith is the German answer to Kamado Joe, and the Icon is its most portable model. 33 cm, 35 kg, real ceramic — the direct Joe Jr rival for European terraces.
The European pick for those who want a Monolith without the Classic Pro budget.
Pros
- Real Monolith ceramic, not a Chinese rebrand
- 35 kg — one person can move it
- European after-sales service
- Perfect size for balcony and terrace
Cons
- 33 cm is tight for 2-4; doesn't scale
- No Divide & Conquer-style multi-tier system
- Smaller accessory ecosystem than Kamado Joe
For you if…
If your space is a small terrace or balcony and you want European ceramic with warranty and service nearby.
Not for you if…
If you cook for more than 4 — the Icon will feel tight. Step up to Junior Pro 2.0 or Classic Pro.

Essentials to get started

Big K Lumpwood charcoal 10 kg
En un Icon de 33 cm gastas poco carbón por sesión: un saco de 10 kg te dura un verano completo de terraza sin recomprar.
€35

Lavatools Javelin PRO Duo instant-read thermometer
Termómetro de pinchar: en un kamado tan compacto, un cable de sonda cruzando la tapa molesta más que ayuda.

JF JAMES.F round acacia cutting board 30 cm
Tabla redonda 30 cm a escala del Icon: cabe en una mesa de balcón y sirve también de bandeja de presentación.

FAQ
Should I buy the Monolith Icon or the Joe Jr for a balcony?
Same 13" segment, opposite philosophies. The Joe Jr brings denser ceramic (Kamado Joe is the benchmark there) and a lifetime warranty. The Icon brings direct European service from Germany and a better-calibrated analog thermometer. Cooking is a wash — the real call is brand: if you value the KJ ecosystem and resale, Joe Jr; if you want fast European spares and a slightly more accessible kamado, Icon.
How long does it take to stabilise the temperature?
Fifteen to twenty minutes for 200 °C, 25-30 minutes for 350 °C. The Icon uses the same ceramic as the Classic Pro 2.0 but in 33 cm — a third of the volume to heat, so noticeably faster than a big kamado. For impromptu Friday-night grilling, that agility changes the experience: light at 9 pm and you are eating by 9:30.
Do I need to buy the deflector separately?
No, the Icon ships with a factory ceramic deflector — a Monolith advantage over the Joe Jr (which does not include one). That means it comes out of the box ready for indirect cooking: pizza, whole chicken, small ribs. Without a deflector, anything above the firebox burns on the outside before cooking through. A genuine 60-80 € saving.
Does it survive winter outdoors without a cover?
The ceramic survives without structural damage, but the fibre gasket and analog thermometer suffer in the continuous winter damp of the Mediterranean coast. On the coast (Levante, Andalusia) use a Monolith or generic waterproof cover — any decent cover stretches gasket life from 3 to 5-6 years. In drier inland climates you can skip it.
Is it really made in Germany?
Designed in Germany, manufactured in China under German QC — like virtually every ceramic kamado on the market, Kamado Joe and BGE included. The difference from a pure Chinese rebrand (Kamado Bono) is QC and European service: spec-correct parts, properly fitted gasket, calibrated thermometer. The "German brand" is real in engineering and aftercare, not in the factory.
