Apple chips are the easiest entry into smoking: mild, slightly sweet aroma perfect for pork, ham, poultry and cheese. Weber processes FSC Polish apple wood into small chips that distribute well over coals.

700g pack of apple chips, ready to use. Weber recommends adding a handful to the coals every 30-45 min for a mild 4-6h smoke. Very subtle aroma — ideal for oily fish and cheese, where stronger woods overwhelm.

Editor's verdict

The starter smoking wood — hard to get wrong.

8.0/10

Pros

  • 100% natural Polish apple, FSC
  • Subtle sweet aroma — doesn't mask
  • Small chip format — easy to dose
  • Trusted brand, consistent batch quality

Cons

  • 700g runs short for weekly long smokes
  • Too subtle for aggressive brisket or pulled pork

Who it's for

For smoking beginners and for delicate fish/cheese/poultry.

Not for

For robust brisket smoke — move to hickory or pecan.

FAQ

  • How many smokes do 700g of chips deliver?

A bag covers 4-5 medium smokes (3-5 hours each) — a generous handful (40-50g) per session. Weekly smoker, the bag lasts about six weeks. Long bi-weekly brisket, you will run short — move to Axtschlag chunks (1.5kg) or large-format chips (3-5kg).

  • What does apple add? Is it very different from cherry?

Subtler than cherry, slightly sweet and very "clean". If cherry is "cherry jam", apple is "mild compote" — a background smoke that does not fight the original flavour of the cut. That is why it works so well on oily fish (salmon, mackerel), pale-meat poultry (turkey, chicken) and cheese for smoking.

  • Does it suit all kamados or only Weber grills?

It works for everything: any-brand kamado, Weber Kettle charcoal grill, electric smoker, pellet grill or gas smoke box. The "Weber" label is just the brand packaging it; the chips are FSC Polish apple wood that works in any smoke-cooking device.

  • Do I need to soak them or not?

In a kamado, no — drop them dry onto hot coals. In a gas grill with a smoke box, soaking 30 minutes helps them last longer (because the smoke box temperature is higher than a kamado, otherwise they burn instead of smolder). In an electric smoker, model-dependent: check the manufacturer manual.
