Quick answer

Yes, The Bastard Compact is a solid buy if you want the brand's dense ceramic in a terrace format. Across 33 cm and 45 kg it keeps the same airtight lid and the same fine temperature control as the bigger models, but with a footprint that fits where a Large won't. It works as a first grill for couples or as a second unit for pizza and bread while the big one smokes. If you regularly cook for large groups or want to smoke whole cuts, the surface falls short and the Large Complete is the logical buy. Stock is irregular.

The Compact puts The Bastard's dense ceramic into a body built for terraces and tabletops: same airtight lid and fine temperature control, but with a footprint that fits where a Large won't. A great sole kamado for couples or a second unit.

Verdict

Real The Bastard ceramic in a small body: a great second grill or a first one for couples. Stock is patchy.

8.2/10

Pros

  • Same dense ceramic as the Large — no quality cuts in a small body
  • Airtight lid: fine temperature control for low-and-slow
  • Compact footprint fits terraces and tabletops a big kamado can't
  • Grills, bakes, fries and runs low-and-slow like its bigger siblings
  • 20-year warranty on the ceramic body
  • Works with the full The Bastard accessory ecosystem

Cons

  • Small cooking surface: limits big groups and whole cuts
  • Intermittent Amazon ES stock: often shows "currently unavailable"
  • No cart included: needs a stable, heat-resistant surface
  • No heat deflectors as standard — indirect cooking needs a separate part

For you if…

Couples and terrace cooks who want The Bastard's dense ceramic without the Large's bulk. Also a great second kamado for baking pizza or bread while the big one smokes.

Not for you if…

If you regularly cook for large groups or want to smoke whole cuts, the surface is too small: the Large Complete is the logical buy.

FAQ

  • How does the Compact differ from the Bastard Large Complete?

The Compact is the same ceramic DNA in a smaller, lighter body: roughly a 33 cm grate, built for 2-4 diners and for moving or taking camping. The Large Complete feeds 6-8 and ships with a bamboo cart. For a couple or a small terrace the Compact burns less charcoal and heats faster; for family gatherings you will run short.

  • Is it genuinely portable or too heavy?

It is "transportable", not backpack-light: ceramic still has heft, so you move it between terrace and car boot, not over your shoulder up a hill. For car camping it is ideal; if you need to carry it any real distance on foot, look at a steel alternative like the Char-Griller Akorn, which weighs far less.

  • Is it good for long smokes or only quick grilling?

It does low-and-slow beautifully — the ceramic holds 110-120 °C steady for hours — but the small chamber caps cut size: half a rack of ribs, one chicken, a pork loin, not a whole brisket. For large-cut, multi-hour low-and-slow, the Large Complete is the one with the volume.
