Quick answer

Worth it if you cook on a large kamado and keep running short on reach. WMF's sheet gives 44 cm of Cromargan steel, a broad tip and a locking mechanism, and today it sits second in its barbecue-tongs category on Amazon.es: that speaks of how widely it sells, not of quality. We haven't tested it. What does hold up on paper is that an all-steel tool with no plastic suffers nothing beside a 250 °C dome, and the lock solves storage.

WMF's BBQ-line tongs: 44 cm of Cromargan steel, a broad tip and a lock that keeps them shut for storage. On paper, exactly the length you want for reaching inside a kamado dome without toasting your forearm.

WMF's spec sheet is terse, and it doesn't need to be longer: 44 centimetres long by four wide, Cromargan stainless steel — the German firm's name for its 18/10 alloy — a broad tip, a locking mechanism and a hanging loop. No rubber, no silicone: it is metal from tip to handle, and dishwasher safe according to the manufacturer.

Those 44 cm matter more on a kamado than on an open grill. When you lift the dome of a Classic or a Large at 250 °C, hot air rises vertically exactly where your arm is about to go, and the grate sits deep and narrow relative to the opening. With short tongs you end up resting your forearm on the ceramic rim; with these you work from outside it. The lock is the detail you appreciate daily: it shuts the tongs so they hang from the loop instead of sprawling open across half a drawer.

What it doesn't do: this is not a coal tool. The broad tip is built to hold food, not to rearrange lit charcoal or lift a deflector at 300 °C; charcoal tongs and long gloves exist for that. And because it is all steel, the handle heats up if you leave it resting inside the dome while the meat cooks.

Editor's verdict

A sober, well-resolved tong: genuinely long, all-steel and with a lock for storage. It lacks an insulated handle, and the weight isn't in the manufacturer's sheet.

8.1/10

Editorial rating from spec sheet, measurements and kamado fit · not a hands-on test

Pros

  • A published 44 cm: hand clear of the heat column when the dome opens
  • Locking mechanism: stores and hangs shut, not sprawled across a drawer
  • Broad tip per the manufacturer, for large and slippery cuts
  • One-piece Cromargan steel: no plastic to suffer beside hot ceramic
  • Dishwasher safe and with a hanging loop, according to the spec sheet

Cons

  • Bare steel handle: it heats up if you leave it resting inside the dome
  • Broad tip: clumsy for asparagus, sardines or plating
  • WMF publishes no weight or steel thickness; stiffness can only be judged in hand

Who it's for

For anyone cooking on a large kamado who wants one long, all-steel tong with no plastic parts that stores locked shut on a hook by the grill.

Not for

If you want plating precision, or you turn thin asparagus and sardines, 44 cm with a broad tip is a blunt instrument.

FAQ

  • Aren't 44 cm too long for a kamado?

Quite the opposite: a kamado's opening is narrow and the grate sits low under the dome, so much of that length is spent inside. On a Classic or a Large, the published 44 cm keep your hand out of the rising hot air. On a small tabletop kamado they are genuinely unwieldy, and a 35 cm tong handles better there.

  • What is the locking mechanism actually for?

To hold the tongs shut when you aren't using them. In practice that means two things: they hang closed from the loop beside the kamado without snagging everything else, and they take far less drawer space than a 44 cm open spring. WMF doesn't describe the type of catch on its sheet, so we won't promise comfortable one-handed operation.

  • Can I move coals or the deflector with them?

Better not. These are serving tongs: the broad tip is meant to hold food, not to pinch lit briquettes or lift a hot ceramic piece that is heavy and slippery. Dedicated 50 cm charcoal tongs exist for the fire, and long gloves for the deflector. Forcing food tongs into those jobs eventually bends the tips out of true.

  • Do they survive the dishwasher and coastal salt air?

The manufacturer declares them dishwasher safe, and 18/10 stainless resists corrosion well. No steel is immune to salt air: if you live near the sea, dry them as they come out of the dishwasher and store them indoors rather than leaving them hanging outside all winter. Surface rust specks usually come from standing water, not from the steel.
