The chimney starter reinvented: a cone shape that multiplies the draught, stainless steel that lasts and a second life as a mini fire bowl. Different from the classic Weber units in concept and finish.

Höfats is a German fire-design studio that has won awards turning utilitarian barbecue objects into pieces you want on display, and the Cone is its chimney starter. Unlike the straight cylinder of old, like the Weber RapidFire units already in our catalogue, the Cone is an inverted truncated cone: the narrow base concentrates the cubes or flame and the wide top opening creates a more aggressive chimney effect, so the charcoal lights evenly and fast. It is built in good-gauge stainless steel with no coatings to burn off, so it does not rust or warp like cheap chimneys after a season. The detail that sets it apart is the dual use: once the charcoal is lit, instead of tipping it out you can stand it on its base and use it as a small decorative fire bowl. It is considerably dearer than a purely functional chimney, and honestly you are also paying for the design. But if you value owning handsome, well-built tools that last years, the Cone is one of the few lighting accessories that is a pleasure to use.

FAQ

  • How does it differ from a normal Weber RapidFire chimney?

In shape and finish. The Weber is a straight cylinder, functional and cheaper; the Höfats Cone uses a cone shape to force more draught, quality stainless steel and a design meant to be seen. It also serves as a decorative fire bowl, which the Weber does not. You pay more for build and looks.

  • How much charcoal fits and which kamado is it for?

It has a medium chimney capacity, enough to light the load for a classic or large kamado in a single batch. For a small kamado like the Joe Jr. you have more than enough with a smaller load. You light in the chimney, then pour the embers into the firebox.

  • Do I need firelighter cubes to use it?

Yes, a chimney needs a fire source at the base: the cleanest is one or two natural wood-wool cubes. Avoid newspaper, which leaves embers and ash flying inside the kamado. With a couple of cubes and ten minutes the charcoal is ready.
